Simultaneous interpreting<\/i> is the most suitable technique for conferences, seminars and meetings involving a large audience. Simultaneous translation allows the proceedings to continue uninterrupted. Interpreters are in booths, usually at the back of the room or on a balcony in the auditorium. They translate immediately what they hear the speakers say through their headsets.<\/span><\/p>\n

This process requires audio systems that meet international standards: microphones and headsets, sound-proofed booths to stop interference from background noise in the room. Most auditoriums and convention halls are equipped with sound systems and translation booths. In the absence of a cabin, it is possible to use translation suitcases, which are more flexible in terms of clutter and cost but not without certain constraints. Simultaneous interpreters usually work in teams of 2. Under certain conditions, a person can handle the translation on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consecutive interpreting<\/i> is a technique used for short presentations and speeches (round-tables, mini seminars…) or training courses, because it presents constraints in terms of delay between the original speech and the translation. The interpreter does not translate at first, he listens to the speaker and takes notes, he returns them as soon as the speaker marks a pause. This technique slows down the course of your event as it doubles the time of the interventions. Furthermore, it can interfere with participants who do not wish to hear the translation. The technical equipment is kept to a minimum, to a microphone for the speaker and the interpreter and a loudspeaker for the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certified interpreting<\/i> is not a technique but rather a qualification. They are held fully liable for accurately conveying the meaning to the involved parties in the discussion. Certified\/sworn interpreters have the same status as certified translators (see the French decree on how certified translators are appointed)<\/a>. Only certified\/sworn interpreters appointed by the court can provide certified interpreting. Such interpreting is typically a discussion where the parties are signing a binding document (sales deed, affidavit, proxy or powers of attorney, etc), which takes place generally in a notary\u2019s office or at a court hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Liaison interpreting<\/i> is a “free” translation technique between 2 or 3 people. It is often used for business negotiations or company tours\/visits, brain-storming work sessions, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interpreter repeats the speaker’s words in the visitor’s language, sentence by sentence. No equipment is required with this method.<\/span><\/p>\n

NEGOTIATIONS, STRATEGIC DISCUSSIONS, TOURS…<\/span><\/p>\n

Whispered interpreting<\/i> is simultaneous translation whispered to up to 2 participants. This technique is an option when the need for translation is not sufficient to justify the use of equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with simultaneous translation, whispered interpreting may require 2 interpreters who will alternate every 20-30 min. Under certain conditions, a person can handle the translation on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n
